Welcome Letter from Dr. Horn to participants of Biotechnology-Aquaculture Interface Workshop

Dear Participants:

On behalf of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) I would like to welcome you to this workshop on "Biotechnology-Aquaculture Interface: The Site of Maximum Impact." I believe this workshop, which is sponsored by ARS and the Oceanic Institute (OI), will be of great importance to the aquaculture industry. Aquaculture plays an increasingly vital role in meeting our Nation's food supply needs. We are honored that so many leading experts in U.S. aquaculture and biotechnology from industry, academia, and various federal agencies are in attendance, and we look forward to your enthusiastic participation.

The purpose of the workshop is to identify significant biotechnology research needs that can be translated into commercial reality during this decade. Once these needs are identified, that information can be used for research planning by ARS and others.

At the completion of the workshop, a report highlighting the research priorities you identify, a matrix of short- mid- and long-term prioritized research needs, and the scientific presentations will be made available on the ARS National Program web site (www.ars.usda.gov).

I would like to express my deep appreciation to the President and CEO of the Oceanic Institute, Dr. Thomas E. Farewell, for co-sponsoring this important workshop, and to all the OI and ARS staff for their untiring efforts in organizing this event.

We are fortunate to be at the National Conservation Training Center of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service -- a most beautiful and reflective setting for discussing the vital biotechnology research needs of American aquaculture. I trust you will find your time here well spent.

Sincerely,

FLOYD P. HORN
